Bats from the Underworld Artwork

"Bats from the Underworld" was inspired by the isolating year of the pandemic lockdowns. Like many people I re-discovered an affinity with nature and especially the forests. I have created a series of work based upon the atmosphere and magic of the woodland. It had never felt so obvious that the past few hundred years of global industrialisation and urban living has effectively made us forget where we came from. This image was inspired by a tiny Pipistrelle Bat diving fast and unpredictably around my head as I walked through the forest after the sun had gone down. I had mistimed the length of time I had been in the woods. I suddenly realised that the bat was effortlessly missing my hair, at speed, and was feasting on the little midges that had chosen to pester me on my way back. I could only marvel at the virtually blind bat's precision, and despair at my own uselessness in the dark as I tripped over all and everything, and was totally blind to head height branches hanging from the trees. I wondered how far away the bats roost would be, and wondered how many bats would make up a colony, and pondered on a bats lifecycle and my ignorance of it. This image became the answer to my ignorance.
