About The Artwork

24 Solar Terms is a system of time embodied the traditional knowledge and the social practices through which Chinese organize their perception of the regularity of seasons, of astronomical laws and of other local natural phenomena occurring in the course of the year. the artist is inspired by the ancient eastern way of living, observing and experiencing the nature, trying to figure out how to cope and thrive in the nature, their living environment. The series divide 24 Solar Terms in 4 editions according to the four seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Each season includes 6 images depict and elaborate the traditional observations lyrically as well as metaphorically, trying to convey and express the sense and spirit of living in the ancient east throughout the human evolution and civilization. All 24 pieces in this series are painted on Chinese rice paper with water based material, water color, gouache, acrylic and ink, in art deco, or art nouveau style, an allusion to the eastern meditative contemplation.

LU HONG is a contemporary Chinese American artist, born in Qin Huang Dao, a coastal city of Northern China. After graduating high school, he attended one of the most prestigious art schools in China, Central Academy of Art and Craft. However, he was expelled by the authorities next year because of his political and academic dissident. He moved to the United States, living and working in Los Angeles, California since 1985. As a Chinese American painter, I'm interested in creating a personal style of mixture with modern, art nouveau and Chineses ink art, by using mixed mediums (water based material, such as water based material, water color, gouache, acrylic and ink) applied on Rice Paper. Maybe because I'm a Chinese, I feel comfortable and emotionally more related to paper, especially rice paper than canvas. Also I like the free spirit of water based material than oils. Beside some ancient oriental art, I've studied western artists such as Paul Klee, Odilon Redon, René Magritte and some other European modernist; I'm also fascinated by primitive arts, ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, and Mayan arts. I've been inspired by mythology, ancient legends, ethnic genesis, folklore and fairytales, and recently I get more feelings about nature and bio evolution, or the ideas about Unity of Nature, which provides a perfect opportunity to meditate, or contemplate the thinking of the west intertwined with the thinking of the east, and lead me into a new artistic development in future.
