ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Birds occupy an important space within Inuit myth. They are a source of magic, creation, knowledge and secrets. Growing up, the Ravens were some of my first friends and teachers. Their jet black feathers, the sheen in their eyes invoked a sense of wonder and curiosity in all who were willing to slow down and watch them for a moment. "A Bird's-eye View" is an ode to this.

My name is Annie Pillaktuaq! I am in Inuit artist with disability born and raised in Iqaluit, Nunavut. My work challenges what you think you know about Inuit artists. It is a marriage of Inuit symbols and motifs with contemporary, bold lines, as well as colours. I am deeply influenced by some of the original masters of cubism, while also reflecting my Inuit identity and experience to create art. The simplicity of Inuit drawing inspires all of my work. I describe my pieces as edgy, unpretentious, and minimal, but always powerful and steeped in the Inuit culture and way of knowing the world.
