Cuts and stitches always tell a story of survival, of second chances, of endurance. Even though it's more convenient to throw it all away, to dispose, to replace, to get it up to standard, I figured a ripped canvas can still find its place in the art world and tell a story of its own.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The painting is inspired by the story about an orphan that I've heard on TV. No, it's not about the trouble with gender stereotyping, in this case it's about how stereotyped possessions, if not chosen freely, might be an indication of one's misfortune. "Pink sandals for a boy? So what! But in reality pink sandals for a boy... Can you see the difference? After all, you wouldn't make your son wear pink shoes" says TV host Ruta Mikelkeviciute. The pink shoes in this painting signify the disposability of this little human being and the parental love and care he's deprived of. When I decided to work on the Boy in Pink Shoes, a well known Van Gogh's Eternity pose crossed my mind so I adopted it for my own interpretation. Why? I guess at any age one might hunch and ask: "is this for long is this for ever, is this for eternity?" Cuts and stitches always tell a story of survival, of second chances, of endurance. Even though it's more convenient to throw it all away, to dispose, to replace, to get it up to standard, I figured a ripped canvas can still find its place in the artworld and tell a story of its own.

My work is a visual diary of collective and individual emotions, observed in people that I encounter or come across on social media, and also of self-reflection and life's ordinary details discovered and stitched together while travelling. The application of bold, expressive colours and thick textures are the main characteristics of my paintings. Although I use my personal and publicly available images as a starting point, spontaneous dynamic brushstrokes and hues play a significant role in the painting process, often dictating a theme I don’t ideate before beginning to create a particular piece. An additional layer of meaning is usually attached by the viewer whose set of internal data containing either deep personal turmoils or tranquil oasis narrates stories of its own. To me, creative living is more than a practice of visual arts. It's the courage to live according to your own imagination, not someone else's noooormal standards. My blog focuses on the forms of free self-expression in all spheres of life – from individual lifestyle and career choices to culture and society. Please do give me a shout if you feel compelled to share your views about it! There is a reason, why my writing and painting go hand-in-hand. I'm a philologist by degree. In 2011, whilst in my last year of Lithuanian Philology and Advertising studies at Vilnius University, I moved to London to have a swim in unknown waters. Right after graduation, I immersed myself in visual art. Life experience has proven that creative potential is a substantial part of my personal identity, which brings meaning into my life, empowers and keeps me sane in perplexing situations as well as enables to build bridges between the inner and outer worlds.
