ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sometimes I see my surroundings as if I were viewing them through a camera lens, distortions and all. This painting is an architectural abstraction of the courtyard at the deYoung Museum in San Fransisco. I loved how my brain saw lines, angles, shapes and shades and I knew it would be fun to paint. At first I tried painting the boulder that people were sitting on, but then I though how fun it would be to use styrofoam covered with formed and painted canvas to make them actually 3-dimensional instead of just painting them to look that way. This is also one of my first experiments in combining both brushwork in oil paint and poured painting in acrylic. My hope is that the viewer will feel the openness and grandeur of the courtyard of the museum, a place that has always held such a special place in my life.

Originally from Texas, George Evan Davis has lived in Honolulu, Hawaii for almost 40 years. He started painting while still in high school in Houston, Texas and graduated from college in 1978 with a BA in Art and Psychology from East Texas State University. After declining acceptance into a graduate program in Art Therapy, he moved to Dallas to pursue his dream of taking the art world by storm. However, after living the life of a starving artist he put his dream on hold and over the course of the next 45 years had two successful careers, one as an illustrator and graphic designer, and one as a massage therapist and body worker. Now, on the precipice of retirement (and no longer starving), he has picked up where he once left off and is following his dream of creating full time. Working primarily in oils and acrylics he has developed a style that, like gender, is fluid and unconfined. Sometimes his work is realistic and representative and other times it’s abstract and the concept defines the process and medium(s). Sometimes he has something very personal or political to say but at other times he paints just for the joy of creating something cool and beautiful.
