About The Artwork

This painting portrays the physical and optical challenges of navigating The Lost World Track, located high on kunanyi (Mt Wellington, Hobart). A steep and challenging track of fallen car-sized dolerite boulders, which are covered in lichen and the occasional circular track-marker painted directly onto the boulders in red and yellow. On this Track one is constantly shifting their eyes from down at one's feet (to prevent falling into a cleft between boulders) to up ahead; at the next looming boulder to be scaled and for the next faded track marker to be found. The painting seeks to embody this experience by conflating these two views, the ground and the vertical, into the one flat picture plane.
