About The Artwork

Loic in his work, uncovering the beauty of daily life and the human form which for him is made more beautiful by the marks left on it by strong emotions and the vagaries of fate. He is a painter of the complex daily stories and struggles which take in the house, streets, and bars of the big city, of a life which in his own words is “above all serious and profound, but never hopeless.” The characters he paints tend to be reflective, absorbed in their own thoughts, unconsciously showing a wide range of emotions which are richly evoked by the almost transparent veils of paint and ink with which Loic builds up his canvases.

Loic Allemand was born in 1973 in Agde, on the Mediterranean coast of the Languedoc region of France, and now lives and paints in Paris. He studied at the school of fine art in both Toulouse and Montpellier, finishing off his studies with a two years fine art course in Barcelona at the age of 24. During his time there, he was commissioned by Mayor’s office and the Massana School of Fine Art to paint a large-scale mural in the latter’s main hall, measuring six meters by five and depicting a bustling scene of a tapas bar in the city’s Raval district. The art critic Andrea Francesco Nuti, said of Allemand’s work that it made one think “of German Expressionism, of Klimt, of Fragonard, of a subversive style from another century, too subtle, too strong, too sophisticated, too perfect for the modern era which demands so little.” Loic in his work, uncover the beauty of daily life and of the human form which for him is made more beautiful by the marks left on it by strong emotions and the vagaries of fate. He is a painter of the complex daily stories and struggles which take in the house, streets and bars of the big city, of a life which in his own words is “above all serious and profound, but never hopeless.” The characters he paints tend to be reflective, absorbed in their own thoughts, unconsciously showing a wide range of emotions which are richly evoked by the almost transparent veils of paint and ink with which Loic builds up his canvases.
