A painting evolves over many sessions- the section of light grey lemon yellow initially felt out of place but against the grey tones it works and started to lead in a new softer direction of greys and blues, balanced with stronger geometric shapes and linear trails which come from my sketchbook drawings.

The paintings aren't about a particular place, but they end up feeling like a space we know.

Painting on a wood panel allows me to scratch, erase and rebuild the layers through thicker paint and glazes. I finish with two coats of satin UV varnish and the edges are painted in a gentle off white.

The painting evolves in many layers over repeat sessions until I find places of interest within the work itself. At some point I have to be ready to notice and ‘catch’ what has evolved by chance and use that to guide the painting forwards. ‘Unlocking a landscape’ in this way brings a balance of fine control and keeps the freshness and feeling of energy that comes from the painting itself. The end stages are carefully considered with very small and detailed refinements. Some paintings can be more closely identified with a ‘view’ and others become more abstract. But to me they are all landscapes; a visual reaction to what we choose to notice in our surroundings and encourage into our lives. I'm a full time professional artist working from my studio in London, selling direct to collectors through my website.
