Inspired by the sighting of a rare grey whale of the coast of Massachusetts about the time of painting. The whaling paintings of JMW Turner are among my favorites of his work. I keep having thoughts of responding to those paintings that depicted the industry of whaling with those that celebrate the majesty of the animals themselves while paying homage to his work. This painting is a down payment on that idea!
