"A Summer Afternoon" captures the vibrant beauty of a simple still life through bold colors and expressive brushstrokes. The warm oranges of the flowers dance against the soft purples and cool greens, creating a striking balance between warmth and calm. The rich reds and yellows of the fruit provide focal points that pull the eye across the canvas. This use of color, along with the simplified forms, connects the painting to the Fauvist movement, where artists emphasized expressive color over realism. Drawing influence from both Post-Impressionism and Modernism, this painting reduces objects to their essential shapes while retaining a sense of spontaneity and energy. The floral arrangement and fruit bowl, common still life subjects, are elevated through dynamic brushwork and vibrant contrasts. "A Summer Afternoon" conveys a sense of timelessness, blending natural elements with a contemporary interpretation, much like the works of the early 20th century artists who sought to push the boundaries of color and form.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
