Throughout his life, self taught, Italian born visual artist - creative entrepreneur Alex Di Silvestro, has experimented and worked across a wide spectrum of visual arts, including cut out paper collages, ink sketched and digital illustration, fashion, photography & interior design. STATEMENT As a self-trained visual & portrait artist, I endeavour to create unique original artworks which purely reflects my own natural inspiration and individuality, untouched by academic rules or standards, while bridging the gap between the harmony of design and the chaos of art. In the current times of social decadence where vulgar, mediocre and ugly seem to rule, and despite the common attraction for awkward and unnatural, I firmly pursue my celebration of beauty, harmony & positive. My ICONIC PORTRAITS are the result of an abstract, minimal and hypo-realistic interpretation of real and fictional human and animal characters alike, aimed to capture the essence, emotions and stories of the subjects in a single, bold frame. My main inspiration comes from design, music & fashion icons, graffiti & street art, films and photography of my favourite decades: the Swinging Sixties, the Cool Seventies, the Electric Eighties and the Hip Hop Nineties. Another great inspiration which is also part of my personal story is the master of surrealism Salvador Dali' and his incredible eccentric multifaceted genius, who has literally become my artistic muse. My latest inspiration comes from my local area, the Wild Spanish Costa Brava, with its vivid colourful sunsets, crystal blue sea waters, deep green forests and natural landscapes. My working process, although meticulously studied and planned is rather simple in technique. After an initial sketch, I design each piece on canvas, first on pencil, then with acrylic paint using very light and completely untextured brush strokes, in different layers and mainly flat blocks. I can distress the top layers to create shades or flat texture & I occasionally use spray cans, but just like a touch of chilli on a 'spaghetti al pomodoro'. Colour has a key role in my work, my bold vibrant combinations are key to my hand signature.
