My portrait is from Mathew Brady’s January 8, 1864, iconic photograph. Artists have extra hurdles painting famous people, particularly those living before 1900. First, photographs are black and white; portraits must rely on descriptions. Second, viewers may have preconceptions, recollections (possibly inaccurate) and prejudice. Third, artists must avoid their subjective opinions. Beyond these issues, Mr. Lincoln was challenging because his face is misshapen and asymmetrical. Although I worried any distortions may be unwelcome or questioned, I sided with realism. I painted Mr. Lincoln on traditional wood panel, a superior surface for portraits that is unlikely to deform with age.

I am a self-trained oil painter and have painted since 2009. My focus is urban photorealism. I love bright, rusty colors and find cast-aways have rigid integrity. I like occasional portraits, which make intense demands. Being semi-retired frees me from earning my living as a professional artist. My works are modestly priced in several ranges. Please write if you have questions or comments.
