About The Artwork

Nature has been the primary inspiration for my work.I use overlapping fragments of different flowers, juxtaposed with microscopic images of plant cells, to explore the idea of transformation, that is, the transformation of an object, perceived by the senses, into something which goes beyond the physical. Transformation also refers to the enigmatic nature of the natural world.. I hope that my interest in a transcendent reality , as discovered in nature, will be communicated to the viewer. I use traditional materials such as oil paints , brushes and canvas , as I find them suitable to my method of working and I consider them to belong to the craft of painting which is of primary concern to me.

I am a painter and I was born and raised in Limassol but emigrated to South Africa with my parents when I was 14 years old. I lived in South Africa for 28 years and returned to Cyprus in 1996, where I have been living and working since. My primary theme is the exploration of natural forms and , in my more recent work in particular, of flowers. Flowers to me are representative of the microcosm in relation to the macrocosm, the finite as expressive of the infinite. Flowers have also been associated with a long-standing tradition which connects them to female sexuality as many of them resemble in form the female genitalia. This association has been given to my flowers as well, but my main aim in painting the flowers, in great detail and enlarging them, is to transmit the feeling of awe and mystery which I experience before even the minutest forms of nature.
