About The Artwork

A distillation of a moment in my artistic past. From a time when I was a teenager in the 80s. The visual language that I was excited by then. Richard Rodgers and Ettore Sottsass mixed in with Agnes Martin, Georgia O'Keeffe and Ferdinand Leger I wanted to create the sensation of a finished desirable object to be owned. The desire to have and to own an object is something that fascinates me, there is something toothsome about it. The sense of joy and excitement it can bring. The vintage gold frames ( there is a pair) was my starting point. The gold, and the desire for ostentation that it symbolises, so much a part of the 80s. The decorative gold works against the playful smooth lines of the central shape and the pink and deep red. Pink pastel shades that evoke the 80s so well. The other characters harking back to an earlier modernist aesthetic. Painting in chalk paint and acrylic mediums allows me to both build up thick, opaque, textured layers and to thin it down and apply in smooth satisfying glazes. The early stages of the painting are often quite meditative as feel the paint slip over the board. My paintings are an introspection into my visual life. There are many influences and references to other artists, designers and styles, all combining into a snapshot of my interests at a given time.

Artists statement I paint using my intuition, the shapes and forms are part of my internal visual library. Images collected from my earliest memories. With small sketches and cut outs to plan the composition I allow the colours to evolve to create a mood or feeling to each piece. Using acrylics, emulsion and chalk paints, I enjoy the sense of applying the paint, in an almost mediative way, finding the right curve or brush stroke to create the balance I am looking for. The images at the forefront of my focus at the moment are from my early days at art college in the 1980s. The playful, colourful imagery of post-modernism Richard Rodgers, Ettore Sottsass and the 'Memphis' collective, and Missoni. With a nod to the art books that were part of my childhood, Wassily Kandinsky, Ferdinand Leger, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and more recently discovered Agnes Martin. I am always fascinated by modernist paintings in galleries. The minimal shapes frequently framed in ornate traditional frames. I love the tension between these two, the final object being a fusion of two visual languages. I like to source old frames and give them a new life, painting an image specifically for that frame and creating a new and 'desirable' art object. My work is in private collections in the UK, the US and Canada. Maevaughn Chiu
