Marly Freij is a painter living in the Netherlands. She creates abstract landscapes and seascapes. She also creates pure abstract paintings and portraits of women. A lot of variety in subject, color, technique and materials can be found in her work. She likes to experiment and is looking for challenges in her work. If challenges appear, she tries to find a new approach or a different solution. The result is a colorful and varied collection. Nature is an important source of inspiration. She is fascinated by the way nature affects people. The tranquility, that makes you think or clears up your mind. The views, the horizon, which challenge you to look beyond your own horizon. That feeling she is trying to evoke with her paintings. A starting point in all her land- and seascapes is therefore vista and depth . By creating a lot of details, rather suggestions, in her land- and seascapes, the viewers of her paintings can make their own interpretation. In order to promote this, Marly does not give titles to these paintings. Her needs for challenge and contrast in her work is clear when you see her entire collection: subdued colors in her seascapes versus an exuberant color palette in her landscapes, landscapes made up of organic shapes versus landscapes made up of geometric shapes ( “How can I create vista with organic forms and how can I create it with geometric forms”). In addition, her material use is characteristic of her work. She uses high pigmented acrylic paint and combines it with all kind of materials to create al beautiful “skin”. She uses all kinds of materials in her collection “abstract paintings”, which she later applies in her collection “sea- and landscapes”. Women’s faces is the central theme of her fourth collection: strong women, quirky women, relaxed women, women plunged in thoughts ,cautious women etc. In fact, all portraits are the many faces of one single woman. The portraits are partly included in the background and sometimes they only show themselves after looking twice.
