About The Artwork

For the Abysses project (drawing and painting), I was inspired by the immersive experience I had on snorkeling trips. Here, the body is weightless, it is immersed in a landscape where the elements float in space. The depth of field is atmospheric rather than geometric and linear. This experience places the body-observer all in and all out at the same time. This experience calls for an "oceanic feeling" (Freud), that is, a feeling of something unlimited, infinite. This feeling takes hold of the body when it becomes one with the environment, it is free of any border between inside and outside, and even of physical landmarks.

Guylaine Chevarie-Lessard is an emerging artist and essayist. She works between Montreal and Frelighsburg in Quebec, CA. Her works of part of private and corporate collections including Desjardins. She has several solo exhibitions at her credit, both in Quebec and in Canada. She has a Ph.D. in arts from Quebec University in Montreal (2015). Her thesis has been published in 2019 to Nota Bene editions (The Voice, between the Audible and the Visible). She has also a master in Art philosophy (UQAM, 2001) and a BFA in Visuals Arts (Concordia, 2009). Her last exhibitions has been presented at McClure Gallery (Montreal) and at Maison des arts de Laval, Qc (2019). My pictorial practice focuses on the close links that unite the body and its experience of the landscape. I am inspired by modern painting – understood as a search of « absolute form » - whose heritage she pursues while seeking to update it. However, it differs from formalism since « form » here carries poetic meaning. I present these pictorial works in an installation form creating a dialogue between each of the works which form here pictorial poems whose relationships are articulated like a musical phrasing. These works tell nothing, tell no story. They are a sensitiv abstraction that calls for a possibility, an opening, a hope, without knowing what it contains. They praise beauty knowing that harmony contains a disharmony that gives it all its meaning.
