ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Ace Frehley...iconic guitarist and founding member of rock band KISS. Playing himself as the Ace of the poker Royal Flush series. Technical Details: This painting is a mixed media work of black Japanese sumi ink (as are all the paintings in this suit series), candy red spray paint for the A Heart. As an homage to the original KISS Rock and Roll Over album cover artwork which this image comes from, all the colored parts (eye lasers, blue eyes, iconic silver eye mask makeup, inner mouth on both sides of tongue) are achieved in Prismacolor colored pencil. This original artwork was created entirely in colored pencil, and saw it sold recently at a rock and roll auction for $60,000 USD! Such a cool and groovy series, everyone feels something about these icons, the game, the rush of poker, the 1000+ year history of playing cards and gaming. A human necessity!

Mono No Aware is a Japanese concept of Value for the fleeting and impermanent. The 1-week cherry blossom sesason is the most well-known example. Important and Valuable because it lasts so short. As an American living and making art in Japan, the opposing worlds of Past and Present, West and East, Fact and Fiction blend. This work takes shape at those intersections of real and imagined, lived and dreamed, recalled and fabricated. The work exists in the gap between actual events and memory imagined, created, distorted, magnified and buried. ---
