About The Artwork

Taken from a series of drawings and colour studies whilst in San Francisco, with drawings made of the iconic views from the city and bay towards Alcatraz. This is a large artwork for me as I normally work on a mcuh smaller scale and on board. I enjoy the hard surface and how board allows the paint to move around on the surface. I am also able to sand and treat the surface so that it can be increadibly smooth. Canvas is bouncy and has texture, so I have had to find ways of treating the surface so that it performs like board to paint on. Working larger would not work on board as it is too heavy and warps, so I cut canvas and added several layers of a ground, sanding it numerous times so that it was smooth. I also attached the canvas to a wall so that I could paint on a hard, non bouncy surface. Adding a ground here gave me the basis for my painting.

Tom Voyce (b. 1989) is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce’s compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment. Artists such as Edward Hopper and Richard Diebenkorn have been immensely influential in his development, as have more contemporary artists- American painter Ben Aronson amongst others. Hopper's proverb, "if you can say it in words, then there's no reason to paint it", forms a principal part of my attitude towards the uniquely communicative purpose of art. His latest body of work entitled 'In Transit' is influenced by travel and place, exploring the landscapes and cityscapes of Canada, the United States, Fiji and New Zealand. www.tom-voyce.com tomrlvoyce@gmail.com
