The inspiration for this painting is a photo taken of me in front of a cascading wall bougainvillea in Palm Springs, California, where the expansive desert and days by the pool stand in high contrast to the claustrophobia and preoccupations of my life in Brooklyn.

Born and raised in suburban Wisconsin, I moved to Brooklyn at age 24 to teach in the public school system, where I just completed my 16th year teaching, primarily kindergarteners and first graders with special needs. Over the last 10 years, painting has resurfaced as a major creative interest of mine, inspired in large part by my students’ free-spirited art-making. Painting from collages of original and collected images, I use bold color and ambiguous shapes to disorient and disfigure familiar sources of pleasure and comfort - food, bodies, nature, and home - to reveal beguiling pictures that contend with the disorder, desire, and surprise of everyday existence.
