The third in a series of square format pictures called ‘Polaroids from Carcosa’, this was among the first of the ‘Emblemata Hypnerotica’ pictures. The title, as with all the others is taken from a 17th century emblem, although the subject has been unrecognisably re-interpreted. I have always been interested in allegorical figures and the clues that artists leave around in order to have identify their subjects. Nine figures surrounding a tenth one should be all the information required to identify the Astrological theme here, if the symbols on the white girdle were not obvious enough. At the time I was painting this I was re-reading Alistair Crowley’s ‘Book of Toth’ and was and still am impressed with the way in which he had managed to layer Astrology, Kaballah and western Mythology onto the symbolism of the Major Arcana Tarot Archetypes. This image is not so erudite, but the Toth tarot cards visible beneath the Hierophant’s robe make reference to the above. Eris’s golden apple also rolls on the floor to add deliberate confusion.
