About The Artwork

I created "Alchemy at dusk I and II" (refer other image on Saatchi) over several months – beginning in the studio and then working plein air in summertime in the early evenings accompanied by the glow of the setting sun. Through experimentation with texture and a variety of non-conventional tools, I endeavoured to capture the mystery and potency of the native forest behind my studio which is a constant source of inspiration, energy and intrigue. "The duo of paintings by Deborah Moss reminded me of what you might see out of the windows of a New Zealand batch in the last few hours of sun after a long summers day. The paint strokes and colours allude to a New Zealand backyard environment. Deborah approached the paintings as an experiment. Using non-conventional tools dipped in to deep greens, mauves and golden tones with hints of pohutukawa red to capture the mystery and potency of our native forest." - [Stir Creativity - A review of 'Mixology' Exhibition by Jodi Meadows] Framed with an Ash-timber moulding by award-winning framer Emma Jean Framing Gallery, Auckland. Ready to hang. All artworks are signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Deborah Moss works from her country studios beside a native forest in North Auckland which provides endless inspiration for her creative practice. Working mostly with paint, she begins each piece with expressive marks which mirror her dynamic surroundings. Layers and colours in this stage are applied playfully - inviting a more considered response as the dialogue between gestures and storytelling evolves. Experimenting with texture and a variety of non-conventional tools adds depth and interest in her paintings. She strives to create contrasts between considered and gestural marks; light and dark, space and active areas but above all - a passionate response to her muse in her chosen medium. The artist has exhibited throughout New Zealand and her works are held in private collections in New Zealand and the United States, Singapore, England and Australia. She has been a regular finalist in national art awards and is the 2022 Supreme Winner Craig's Investment Partners Art Prize (Wanaka). Every time Deborah sells an original artwork, a native tree is planted on her property as part of her “Planting hope” initiative to help the environment.
