Shakhmardan Zhumakhanov is a contemporary artist based in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He graduated with a Master’s degree in Fashion Design from the T.K. Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts in 1999. It was during his academic years that Shakhmardan discovered the core principles that would define his artistic path: association, abstraction, emotion, and sensory perception.
Working primarily with acrylics, Zhumakhanov explores the depth of human feeling through rich textures and evocative layers. He is deeply drawn to the aesthetics of antiquity, incorporating weathered effects and subtle distressed textures into his canvases to create a sense of history and timelessness.
While inspired by the light and atmosphere of French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, his greatest artistic touchstones are Pablo Picasso’s Cubist masterpiece "Portrait of Ambroise Vollard" and Kazimir Malevich’s "The Knifegrinder". In his work, Shakhmardan masterfully bridges the structural precision of his design background with the expressive freedom of abstract art.

For me, visual art began as an unexpected revelation—a sudden awakening of creative forces that I was neither ready for nor fully conscious of at the start. Yet, once discovered, it became my essential way of self-expression. I find nothing more captivating than the process of observing a subject, analyzing its deepest essence, and translating those core characteristics into a unique visual language.
My creative process is guided by intuition and a profound trust in the subconscious. Rather than following strict plans, logic, or rigid rules, I silence the analytical mind and let the canvas lead me. Through pure imagination and spontaneous impulses, the artwork organicly unfolds, allowing deep-seated emotions and associations to take shape.
I believe that art is a wondrous world where the artist acts as a creator and a medium, giving visible, tangible form to abstract thoughts. It is an invitation to perceive reality through a completely different lens and a bridge to connect with like-minded souls. On my canvases, every element—every deliberate color choice, textured stroke, and compositional decision—holds its own sacred place and meaning.
