American Highway, New Mexico Painting

I often work from photographs: mine and other people's. In the case of 'American Highway', I took my inspiration from a photograph by Robert Frank. When I see an image that inspires me or suits my style, I work on it to 'make it mine' so to speak and to come up with my own interpretation. I will often add and eliminate objects and backgrounds, change the sky, alter the weather and perspective, and so on. I am fascinated by silhouettes and often use them in landscapes to add a point of focus or give meaning to the subject. Shadows, both of people and objects, also fascinate me. Other artist's work -- particularly from the 20th century -- is also an inspiration, and sometimes a deliberate starting point for my own paintings. My work is in acrylics, always Pebeo studio acrylics mixed with a matt gel to eliminate or reduce the glossy finish. I much prefer matt colours and my hard edge Realist style was developed in art college way back in the 1960's. All my paintings are on stretched canvas on wooden frames. The canvases are supplied with hooks and a wire making them ready to hang and come with a certificate of authenticity signed by me. The paintings are unframed, but if a frame is required I suggest an aluminium or simple painted wood frame. This would be at the purchaser's discretion and expense. The canvases are all a standard 0.75" (18mm) deep, and if required I will paint the sides white prior to despatch. The paintings will be wrapped in bubble wrap and be sent with a protective outer cover. All paintings are signed and dated on the reverse with the title and my own catalogue number. Please note that I never sign on the front. It's just one of those things as I feel it disturbs the effect of the image. I have always signed my work in this way.
