About The Artwork

This painting is part of an ongoing series focused on human engagement in mutually shared spaces. In these works, figurative elements morph in and out of a lexicon of imagined forms and structures, with an emphasis on dynamic interaction, and a holistically flowing psychic arena. Paintings in this series are often set in a landscape vaguely reminiscent of the North American desert west, where vast open spaces and stark light are the setting for intimate interpersonal exchanges. Here, the cast off and forgotten detritus of life is resurrected, and narratives of personal significance merge with those of archetypal of familiarity. Constraints of history dissolve and disintegrate, flavoring dust settling into a geology of time. In these works, some may sense visions of a dystopian present or future, while others may perceive a more harmonious and balanced instance of human presence. Oil painting on panel, on wood box frame.

For more than thirty years now, I have worked in a variety of media, from drawing and painting, to sculpture, video, and installation. In addition to having roots in the fine art tradition, my work is influenced and inspired by a wide range of everyday and vernacular art-making traditions. In my artistic practice I have incorporated a wide variety of techniques as well as interests, in part as part of a broader goal of finding connections across varied aesthetic perspectives. Therefore through art, I seek to engage with others, from all walks of life, in new and unexpected ways, and explore shared visionary spaces. One common aspect of my practice is that I often work with found and recycled materials, particularly in my sculpture and site-specific work – it helps me connect to the world around me, to see it and feel it more directly. Much of my two dimensional work also uses found materials and a process of recycling. (In those works the raw material is typically my old unsold artwork, or miscellaneous studio remnants.) Recent paintings likewise incorporate a process of finding: marks, forms, and gestures are cultivated for discovery and revelation. The ephemeral spirit of exploration and discovery guides the process to new lands, experiences, and insights.
