ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Impression Realism always tries to share the experience, from the foreground which positions us with our feet in the sea, on through the detail to the background with the vision of the seas horizon. The angel on the fountains edge has its own subtle imagery reminding us of the age old symbol of the fountain as supplying us with the water of life...knowledge. The technique used in the actual work by applying several overlaying coats of oil produces a unique surface experience as, for example here, with the water spout. Layers of oils are finely built up and provide a surface on which the surrounding light can reflect and give the impression of movement. The subtle building up of the medium in the painting creates visual changes in the viewing caused by changes in the natural lighting. The object is to give a certain life to the painting.

I began to paint in oils at the age of 10 years old and, after 54 years working, now begin to really feel that something can be achieved. Why did it take so long? Understanding the technique is one thing but motif is another. I call my paintings "Impression Realism" as they all grow out of an initial impression which develops itself into a kind of vision, representing an experience. The motifs find me, call me and demand to be depicted. I have often felt lucky to not have gotten involved in commercial production and so have worked with great freedom and the kind of success which comes from selling without depending on anything else but the actual painting. I hope that they will be enjoyed!
