This painting is part of my series ‘Shadows & Light’. I like to find a balance in how much black and how much white is necessary to create the image I want to reveal. Investigate the complementary effect between two opposite colours. And it is also about darkness and brightness, both literally and figuratively speaking. Literally as in 3-dimensional figuration is based on light and shadow and figuratively there’s a dark side and a silver lining in most things. Happiness, sadness, black and white, the one doesn’t exist without the other.

The canvas is 100% natural unbleached cotton, specially prepared with a few layers of water-based acid-free acrylic adhesive.
Without the gesso the natural feel of the high quality cotton is still visible and tangible.
The paint is a mixture of egg tempera, paynes grey pigment and special liquid binder.

Katelijn Bergman, Zeist 1964 France 1985 - 1986 Amsterdam since 1986 Always fascinated by people. Young, old, male, female, children... Their untransparent thoughts and habits, character and emotions. These I find in all layering of life, in present and past. In addition, I want to depict the essence and also allow a sensation of aesthetics. But within those undefinable laws of beauty, I search for an element that lifts the subject into a larger context. Furthermore I try to find a balance between reason and emotion, between what you see and what you feel, between expression and content. I have a perception of things on multiple levels of reality. A process of acquiring, recording, interpreting, selecting and organizing sensory information on a worldly- and personal level. While painting I search for a tension between the objective and the subjective. Between 2016 and 2018 I painted a series called ‘à la recherche du temps perdu’, in search of lost times. Originally it is the title of a novel by Marcel Proust, he wrote in 7 parts, early last century. These paintings have been exposed on several occassions. At the moment I am working on a new series, Shadows & Light.
