About The Artwork

This one is a milestone piece. It was March 17, 2020, and we took a trip out to Anza Borrego desert on that day. It was the first day of COVID lockdown for us in San Diego. Restaurants closed down except for take-out on that day, and many other businesses shut down temporarily. We were fortunate we had the day off to enjoy the scenery of the desert. Little did we know that this was the start of a long journey for all of us globally. The desert is not my typical landscape of choice, but I love the moodiness and the colors in this one. It was created alla prima (wet-on-wet) in one sitting.

There are often unexpected moments when I find inspiration. I am generally drawn to “places” such as landscapes, seascapes, and urban scenes because of my love for travel, and because there is so much wonder and color in our natural world. Once in a while, I surprise even myself, and will be called to paint other subjects (including a hamburger and french fries). That is the joy of being of an artist – being able to see beauty in many objects around us. It is the combination of these colors in nature and other subjects that transport me to the place and make me smile. I paint because I love it, plain and simple. Painting makes me happy, and it reminds me of these many places and objects I’ve seen. But I also paint to share that vision in my mind with others. My hope is to offer some reminders, in a whimsical colorful way of the delightful images that already surround us. My paintings include scenes which I hope will foster a sense of joy and relaxation, and will create places of memory which we can revisit again and again. I go through periods of time where I paint almost daily, and sometimes I will take a break for weeks at a time. I generally paint in my home studio. However, I also make it a point to paint en plein air whenever I have the opportunity. I have been painting for over 25 years. Prior to painting, I experimented with other art mediums (pastel drawing, ceramics, acrylic painting) – but I have found that oil painting is what has sparked my true artistic spirit. I am fortunate to live in San Diego, California where I think we have some of the most beautiful beaches in the state. My daytime profession is in healthcare, but my artful spirit calls me to create on a regular basis. Thank you for enjoying my work.
