Abstract painting of watercolour on cold pressed watercolour paper by Canadian artist, Brazen Edwards. Brazen’s paintings embrace the spontaneity of ink and watercolour. Her previous work in Sumi-e, places an emphasis on the beauty of each individual brush stroke. The methodology of that art form is the artist must learn to use ink freely with a controlled but spontaneous hand in order to capture the essence of the subject in their ink paintings. To evoke a sense of poetry in nature, brush painters create beautiful lines and forms with ink, but there is no forgiveness once a stroke is placed on the paper. By adapting this knowledge to abstracts, Brazen lays in the foundation with brush strokes and embraces the freedom of the flowing colour; contributing to a creative and spontaneous method of painting. With problem solving and managing her work from an intellectual viewpoint, she is able to create a strong sense of value and composition that creates a gradual evolution of the art work.

I grew up on the prairies of Alberta but always felt a particular pull towards the mountains, ocean and warmer weather so after pursuing a career in Criminology, and raising a set of identical twin boys I moved to BC in 2009 and felt inspired. I realized my one true regret in life was putting my art aside for so long, so with the encouragement of my family, I took the initiative and began devoting myself to painting full time and haven't looked back! After leaving such a stressful career, I felt it was necessary to re-evaluate what I focused on, what I attracted into my life and if my creativity can inspire and bring happiness to others then I feel my life has meaning. In 2015, I opened Ellis Art Studios, a 6000sq ft fine art facility located downtown Kelowna that utilizes a mentor–apprentice model to prepares artists, emerging or professional to develop their art and design skills. I now reside in Vancouver, Canada but spend part of the year painting and travelling the world. Along with my studio and exhibition practice, I also provide workshops, consulting, painting demonstrations and organize art events worldwide. My latest project is a long term art residency in Bangkok, Thailand.
