About The Artwork

Alongside my interest in Renaissance art comes a fascination for Greek Mythology. The busts of Apollo & Artemis in this particular piece were chosen due to their mythological background. These characters are siblings and are both hunters, they have matching hunting straps across their chests to signify this. They were also believed to bring disease upon the people, a dark reminder of the current situation we are faced with today. Despite the dark tone of their history, the composition of the two busts in my artwork, facing one another, wearing their hunting straps like a medal, highlights their power of strength & togetherness. During the idea and creation of this artwork and time of the pandemic, there was the attempt to rebuild a sense of community. ‘Artemis & Apollo’s Plague’ Ultimately reflects upon us today as people, as a community and as a society. The two separate busts reinforce a sense of togetherness in contrast to my previous lone figures and group struggles.

I am a contemporary figurative artist based in Brighton. Born in Scotland I was raised as an athlete but always strived to be a painter. The disciplined nature of my upbringing is reflecting in the meticulously detailed artworks I create. Spending four years at Edinburgh College of Art and a period at the Hungarian University of Fine Art, my fascination for classical architecture and sculpture strengthened. The fascination for the grandiosity of renaissance art contrasting with banal everyday life has been the propeller for the oil paintings in my recent painting series. Fusing classism with contemporary in order to provoke a dialogue concerning current social or political issues. My paintings build a bridge between the old and the new. The Sculptures in my paintings are meticulously chosen subject to their concepts, mythology or tableaux to sympathise with contemporary issues. I am continuing to create oil paintings in relation to the ever-changing experiences the world is faced with.
