Aswang (ghost) - Many of the people who were in my life when I was a child were superstitious and believed in ghosts. I loved (and still love) a good ghost story. A few times these stories were told as a warning in order to keep a pesky kid in line. But rather than prevent a few of us from playing past their bedtimes, the tales would sometimes backfire sending young ones with their flashlights in search of the spirits. Aswang is from the Makahiya Series - The Makahiya is otherwise known as the Shy Plant. When its leaves are touched, they close and fold in on themselves thus earning the plant its name. I grew up in the tropics where I spent many happy hours in fields searching for bugs. It was a special treat to come across this bashful being hidden in the grasses. This series represents just a few events and memories from my childhood; from playing with fire works on New Years Eve, listening to local ghost and faerie tales, to swimming in the ocean while on our yearly camping trips to Pulo Grande (Big Island) in Quezon Province. Mixed Media Abstract Painting Mounted on 8 x 8 x 1.5 inch Wooden Cradled Board Materials: Inks, Acrylics, Resin No need to frame, it is wired in back and ready to hang. Can also be placed to stand or lean the wall on a shelf, desk or mantle. Ships packaged in a box. My resin paintings can be comprised of as many as 5 resin layers. Resin is strong, can be shiny and reflective (depending on how the light hits it), gives the painting a look of being wet or under a piece of glass.

I communicate and tell the world who I am through my art practice. Creating art and working on creative projects is my way making sense of life experiences and my environment. There is a lot of meaning infused into each of my art pieces. I do not exaggerate when I say there is much of myself in every artwork I create. Aside from containing beautiful colours and interesting textures, there is a story behind every one of my creations. And the stories I tell are very personal, usually it's a tale from my childhood and younger years that is lurking behind each rich layer of paint. I was born and raised in the Philippines, where my happiest moments were spent in the lush natural wonders that surround the tiny island nation. Being heavily influenced by Japanese animated cartoons, I started drawing my own and my career as an artist commenced. As an adult I continued drawing or a while and my comics were published in a couple small local publications after immigrating to Vancouver, Canada. But then I discovered acrylic paints. That's when my love affaire with paints began. Versatility was the feature I loved most about acrylics plus its ability to play well with other art materials. After dabbling with acrylics I discovered the wonderfully vibrant and fluid alcohol inks and the glass finish of resin. My mixed media paintings are a marriage of these three materials.
