About The Artwork

Aureate is part of a collection of paintings inspired by the cloud formations I photograph. I am interested in capturing the uncapturable in oil paint and using metal leaf to add the feeling of light showing through the clouds. I often feel the world looks too vivid and pixelated, because of this, I explore how I see colour in every cloudscape I paint. The circular motions reference the atmospheric particles and ice crystals that create every cloud. Aureate explores a new colour palette, contrasting orange, red and pink hues against deep sap and emerald greens.

Charlotte Aiken is a UK based artist, currently working in Gloucestershire, creating visual impressions of the sky through the use of oil paint and mixed media. Her practice celebrates the sublimity of the sky and explores her own fascination with cloud formations and our connection to the natural world. Charlotte graduated from the London Metropolitan School of Art, Architecture and Design, in 2017. Shortly after graduating Charlotte won the Graduate Art Prize, with ARTIQ, London. Charlotte has exhibited across London and parts of the UK, she is represented by The Belgravia Gallery, ARTIQ, Cotswold Contemporary and Ad Lib Gallery. In 2023 her painting was exhibited in ‘Only Connect’, The Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. Charlotte’s work centres on the notion of infinity, as exemplified by her representations of the sky. The composition of her paintings is guided by the structure of the cloud formations she photographs. She chooses on occasion to use decorating brushes to accentuate imperfection and texture, recreating an impression of the sky rather than an accurate portrayal. Charlotte’s work reflects her distinct perspective, where she experiences a world that feels excessively exposed, pixelated, and vivid. She uses her paintings to comprehend what she observes; the layers of colour and brush strokes are physical manifestations of what the world looks like through her eyes.
