The starkness of the Australian landscape is beautiful, and a constant source of inspiration to artists. However, the other side to this is drought. Australia is a continent defined by extremes of floods, droughts, and heat, but and recent decades have seen some extraordinary climate events. As a whole, Australia has a very low annual average rainfall of 419 mm (16 in). The most intense droughts described in the historical records from the 1790’s onwards were devastating to agriculture and the broader economy, but were limited to specific regions. However, the Millennium Drought of 1997-2009 was larger in area and longer than any other drought in southern Australia over the last 400 years. The summer of 2018 brought record-breaking heat for Australia. Low river flows caused by a combination of drought and over-extraction of water, coupled with extreme temperatures, caused an environmental catastrophe that killed thousands of fish. There are large parts of the Macquarie River that have dried up completely as the state of New South Wales remains in the grip of one of the most severe droughts on record. The summer of 2019 is forecast to be hot and dry. It’s one part of the climate crisis playing out across much of the country. Most places are drier than usual, warmer than usual.

AUSTRALIAN ARTIST I am an Australian artist working in Adelaide, South Australia. I paint mostly in oil, but occasionally use acrylic paints. Landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, flower paintings and abstract paintings are included in my repertoire of work. INSPIRATION FOR MY ART As an Australian artist, my inspiration comes from whatever is around me at a particular time. As an example, following a recent trip to the mid north of South Australia, I produced a series of landscape paintings, which include the beautiful Eucalyptus trees and flowers from local gardens. HISTORY My original study was textile design and Adelaide's School of Art and Craft. I then worked for 20 years in various forms of art and fashion. But, in 1997 I followed my other passion, natural health. Since arriving back in Adelaide from Sydney in 1999 I have worked full time as a Naturopath. However, in recent years I have devoted much more time to my painting. Moving full circle, as a practicing Australian artist. This includes participating in exhibitions. Also fulfilling my love of learning by continuing to study and improve my art practice, wherever and whenever I can. Over this period I have attended many and varied art courses and workshops in this time including Peter Bok at Bapea Art School, Liana Vargas Cat Leonard, and Krystina at Splashout Studio, Chelsea Lehman, Trena Everuss and Nona Burden at Adelaide Central School, John Lacey, Ruby Chew, Sophie Hann, Gerhard Ritter, and Deborah Trusson. WHERE ELSE TO FIND ME I regularly post to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
