Beach Ball Bonnet Painting

This is a hardened fabric piece painted with acrylic and spray paint. It has a glossy finish, which makes the surface quite smooth and plastic like. What drives me to work with hardened fabric is the level of difficulty this relief/3-dimensional format imposes. Working with resin allows for a very limited amount of working time before the fabric begins to harden. This can be anywhere between 4-10 minutes depending on the weather and chemistry (hardener to resin ratio) behind it. Once a form takes shape, it is left to harden. Each piece is left to set for at least for 24 hours before applying a primer. Next, I proceed to the painting itself and I finalize the piece with a coat of gloss varnish. What drives me to work with these materials is the possibility of unlimited forms and the challenge each piece inflicts. Small pieces are just as challenging as larger works. Within each form, its folds often dictate how far each color may expand. My goal for this piece was to give a sense of the familiarity through color, yet let the form remain unknown, as if it was once a joyful toy, but whatever it could have been, it is now deflated and forgotten.
