Colorist. Impressionistic artist who begins each painting on a solid bright red canvas. Workshop instructor. Author of art instruction books and DVDs. Using the language of color, my paintings focus on light and its intrinsic meaning. Colors express my emotional response to a moment when sunlight’s enriching presence caught my eye. I exaggerate color differences and hue saturation to communicate the intensity of recalled visual experience. Each work starts on a color ground, the axis for impact dynamics. My paintings have more to do with expressive interpretation than with actual subject. At close range of the canvas subjects lose identity. Brushstrokes, denoting separate abstract color blocks, juxtapose bits of unpainted red ground generating both literal and psychological optical effects. Light is always my motivation. I prefer early mornings or late afternoons when the sun is low and shadows long. Subjects are always real places. Yet, reality of feeling while in the place is more important than location depiction. Through painting I return to an inspiring sight, experienced in solitude, recreated on canvas to be shared. Member: Oil Painters of America
