Joanna Szczygiel is a London-based artist with a background in fine art and art history. She completed a five-year programme focused on painting, drawing, sculpture, and graphic design, building a strong foundation across disciplines that continue to inform her practice. Alongside her fine art training, she is a qualified architect, holding a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Technology in Krakow, Poland, and having also studied at the University of Tennessee, USA. Her architectural background influences the way she thinks about composition, balance, and spatial relationships within a painting. Joanna works primarily with oil paint on linen canvas, using colour and texture as central elements in her compositions. Her work is inspired by the Polish Kapists and artists such as Mark Rothko and Howard Hodgkin, particularly in their use of colour as a means of creating atmosphere and presence. Her paintings explore the relationship between form, colour, and lived experience. Drawing from memory, observation, and imagination, she creates works that invite quiet reflection and personal interpretation. Her work has been exhibited in group shows and is held in private collections in Poland, the USA, and the UK.
