About The Artwork

A very rare session of two models posing together at the SFA organised by the GMBA in Paris. The mighty Bertrand has a strong, silent demeanor about him. His poses often depict strength, power and solidity. I have had the pleasure of drawing this model quite a few times, most notably on the two occasions where he posed alongside a female model for sessions 'en duo', here with Daivika, where the two worked wonderfully together to create original and interesting poses. When doing figure drawing, we contemplate the form, the rhythms, the silhouette for usually one person, and we create a library of information as to how these things often work - the more we do, the more information we gather and are able draw upon in the future when confronted with other poses of a similar nature. But when we are faced with two models interacting, all these things suddenly change and new and unique possibilities present themselves - convincingly portraying the contact and weight of two people is a fantastic challenge and I was delighted to have been invited by Bertrand to attend this session. Here, both models are grounded, with Bertrand leaning backwards to look behind Daivika, applying pressure to her left shoulder, perhaps the pressure causing her to bend forward slightly and lower her head. There is a very prominent triangular composition. Throughout this session I was still in my experimentation phase of using black gouache with coloured acrylic on brown, textured craft paper (smooth on the reverse side). One has to consider also that with two models, there is double the information to get down in the same amount of time. Poses during this session ranged from 5 to 10 and 15 minutes. This was one of the last poses and so was 15 minutes. With less time, and with a desire to incorporate hot, fleshy skin tones, I tried to sketch the figures out as quickly as possible with the black gouache, trying to be very minimal and graphic with my line work, to be able to pass onto the acrylic. As opposed to previous pieces where I spent time adding shadows with a dry brush effect, I relied mainly on the colour to help differentiate the body parts, as to what lay in front of what. I added some dry brush effect behind Daivika's head however to clarify that space between her and him. I place great importance in convincingly portraying volume and depth in an image. All of my figure drawings are from life - no photos were used at any point in their fabrication. The model is in front of you and you have a definite amount of time to get down as much information as you can or see fit. Because of this, each drawing is truly unique and a complete one of a kind, containing a spontaneity that can never be duplicated through photo inspired drawings/paintings. Please look through my work for more of Bertrand and Daivika, as well as other Figure drawing from Paris.

English/French Character Animator that has worked on animated feature films, 'Nimona', 'Missing Link', 'The Secret Life of Pets', 'Minions', and many more over the last 16 years. Figure/Life Drawing is my passion and as well as being something I take great pleasure in doing, also has a very beneficial impact on my professional work in terms of anatomy, weight, movement and posing. When drawing the human figure I love using shadow to create volume and depth, I love trying to capture the weight and movement in an anatomically correct and yet loose manner, and above all, I love finding little attentions to detail that capture the essence of the model, especially around the face. I have lived across 3 different European countries and the US, and am now living in London, UK.
