Bessie Smith was the most popular female blues singers of the 1920's. Known as the "Empress of the Blue," she was the highest paid black entertainer of her day with more than 160 recordings. Her music spoke about independence and sexual freedom. Killed in a car crash at age 43, Bessie's grave remained unmarked until Janis Joplin paid for a tombstone for her. This painting is part of a series: Women Sing The Blues. After watching a documentary about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, I started thinking about other female artists who fought to have their voices heard - pioneers who influenced generations of singers and musicians. It is in these paintings, I wanted to capture their strength and beauty.
