ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Please note: This painting must be shipped in a custom crate. Depending on the time purchased, I may have up to a month to wait for the crate to be built and delivered to my studio. Please take that into account when purchasing this painting. About "Big Bear" - Something catches the attention of this polar bear on his walk through the arctic night. What is it that he might turn around for? As I painted this big fellow, I imagined it was the sounds and smells of a town just beyond the horizon that caught his attention. Hopefully, he makes the right decision to keep going, A result of climate change is that the sea ice that the polar bear is so dependant upon for hunting, traveling, mating and safety, is dispersing earlier and freezing later. This brings our great bear ashore for longer periods of time, increasing its chances of volatile contact with northern people and towns. My polar bear portraits are created in wonder of this magnificent marine mammal and in warning of its vulnerability from climate change. The polar bear is one of the world’s most popular animals yet few of us will cross its path. By my use of realistic portraiture oil painting, I strive to connect the face of this highly intelligent, beautiful and powerful northern apex animal with the southern audience. But these portraits are also about climate change. It is the frozen sea that the polar bear depends upon for hunting, mating, travel and safety. The polar bears in my paintings are safe in the moment. Northern lights, stars and reflections in the water represent hope for the future. But small ice floes, melting ice, dark water and “end of day” sunsets warn of the dangers ahead for the polar bear.

Christine Montague is an award-winning realism painter known for beautiful, emotional, & sometimes haunting polar bear oil paintings. Through her polar bear portraiture she creates a connection to the wonder of the bears, nature, and climate change. July 2023, is "Polar Bear Wonder & Warning" a solo exhibit of polar bear portraits, Christine accepts commissions. She is based in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. When polar bears were listed on the Species At Risk Act, Montague began her passionate journey of painting polar bears. She uses her portraiture and realism oil painting skills, to document and celebrate the polar bear's character and spirit, its high intelligence (think great ape), and its survival in a world of vanishing sea ice. Through her travels to the Canadian arctic (Iqaluit & Cape Dorset, Nunavut) and subarctic (Churchill,Manitoba, Canada - polar bear capital of the world), Montague has furthered her knowledge on polar bears and climate change. In September 2017, "Dark Water 1", a painting of a polar bear in an unfrozen sea, took top award at the Canada wide Canadian National Exhibition Juried Show. “Dark Water”, Montague’s solo show of polar bears and climate change was exhibited at Toronto's Artworld Fine Art Gallery March - April 2018. "on thin ice" is the name of Montague's solo show (Jan. 2 - March 1, 2020) at the Montgomery's Inn Museum, in Toronto, Ontario. In 2023, her 3rd polar bear solo show "Polar Bear Wonder and Warning" took place at the Fireside Gallery at Art Gallery of Burlington, Burlington, ON. Montague’s painting’s have been in over 80 art shows, and are award winning. Her work can be found in collections in Canada, U.S.A., the Netherlands, Denmark, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Australia.
