About The Artwork

This is a portrait of another veteran friend, Bill Dickie, who served two tours in Vietnam. We met in 'God's Country - the Fraser Valley, Grand County Colorado where we worked together roofing. At first Bill, because of my accent mistook me for a Russian, so that was my nickname - 'Russian'. On one occasion the weather was so hot I'd taken all my clothes off with the exception of my undershorts. Coming down off the roof I walked over to where the American guys were getting a beer from the chilly bin on the back of the pickup and Bill. looking at my manhood said loudly 'Say Russian - you ain't tellin' me you been pesterin' American gals with THAT' ! All the American guys looked so I replied 'Well, y' know what they say Bill' He says 'Whatsat' ? I said 'From little acorns do mighty Oak Trees grow' ! So he handed me a beer with a good belly laugh. Later, he told me that while he was in the service his mom had accepted an offer of $ 100,000 from a wealthy lawyer, name of Mike, who promptly laid out millions developing the site which became THE place to go in the resort. All this without consulting Bill who was up to his neck in it overseas. Welcome home buddy !

I am originally British, born in Stornoway Isle of Lewis. Historically I have travelled the world, on one occasion overseas for twelve years non stop. My Mothers side of our family were Scottish, my Father was born in what used to be British North Borneo, now the state of Sabah Malaysia. Dad had served on aircraft carriers as a Fleet Air Arm pilot having signed on in Singapore just before the Japanese invasion. Our great uncle, Hector McNicol founded what became the McNicol School in Kilmarnock which focused on Scottish Landscapes. All of us siblings seem to have inherited artistic abilities of one kind or another.
