Black Head Painting

This is a painting of Black Head point on Monhegan, Island off the coast of Maine. It has been painted numerous times by great American artists like Rockwell Kent, Jamie Wyeth, Robert Henri and Edward Hopper. This is a small painting in pastel on paper. I wanted to capture the monumental quality of Blackhead yet on a small scale. It is a rugged object that is being played off the fragile flowers in the foreground. The sky and sea have an ominous feeling as they press against and threaten the immediate coastline. A pathway is suggested in the foreground that leads our eye to the edge of the abrupt cliff. It suggests danger. Once again, the sense of danger near a cliff that plunges to the sea is offered in the presence of the delicacy of the flowers. The painting is framed with an off white museum matte, glass and an antique gold and brown frame. It received an honorary award for excellence at the Pastel Painters of Maine Annual Exhibition at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine in 2009.
