About The Artwork

The overwhelming technology in our world is an outgrowth of the nearly invisible, ubiquitous silicon wafer known as an integrated circuit. It began as a single transistor and soon shrank so that now there are tens of thousands of these electronic gates on a square centimeter of silicon. Most people never even see them, but they surround us and control nearly every aspect of our lives and culture. I made my image of this world changing processor on a scale befitting its import. The representation of technology using the materials and techniques of antiquity is an irony befitting the unintended and often deleterious consequences of its existence.

Wm. Steven Kroll is an artist, inventor, writer and business owner. In his series "Street Life", Kroll has captured the gritty reality of people surviving and striving on city streets — from a wheelchair-bound homeless man in Houston, to a jazz musician in San Francisco, to a hive of solitary commuters in Taipei. In his businesses he is actively engaged in both electronic and industrial design. Kroll was a finalist in the Arts for Parks national competition; winner of the Houston Art League’s annual competition; finalist in the national Duck Stamp competition;2013 four-time winner of ArtSlant New York; and finalist in a 2013 Saatchi Showdown competition among others.
