This work depicts a tube of golden oil paint merging with deep arterial red — forming a swirling mass that resembles both a divine cloud and a mushroom-shaped explosion beneath the eye of God. The Unknown Artist is a contemporary painter exploring the transformation of Byzantine iconography in the age of digital technology, war, and mass image culture. Her anonymity is a deliberate gesture — a protest against the hyper-visibility of the Instagram era, where identity often overshadows meaning. Like medieval icon painters who remained unnamed, she refuses authorship as both protection and statement, especially in the face of censorship around war. Born in the post-Soviet space and now living in exile, The Unknown Artist uses traditional materials — oil, tempera, schlag gold, digital instruments — to create modern icons that mourn, accuse, and endure. Her solo exhibitions include Modern Pietas and Accidental Light, and her works have appeared at guerrilla show during the Venice Biennale opening in 2022
