Tightly defined around precise angular shapes, the composition exploits a bold sense of duality. Triangular forms appear to be the dominant element in the image yet are themselves parts in a complex geometric landscape. The parallel lines of the canvas limits are repeated within the work creating a sense of multiple canvases within the composition and discrete forms within the larger whole. This quality of multiplicity is reinforced through Marz’s confident choice of color palette. The seemingly restrained field of blue tones is actually a stretch within chromatic limits, playing with dark and light tones, and all between, suggesting no two compositional elements in this painting are truly alike. A single interjection into the structural language of the painting comes in the off-scheme gray and white section, a not so subtle change of course from the artist’s plans and moment of improvisation.
