About The Artwork

8"x 10” on watercolor paper using Koi Japanese watercolors and Staedtler triplus color pens "When I created the first of this series, a friend commented on the watery aspects of the painting. He described it as Damascus steel and at that moment, I knew what the series should be called. Since I was a young child, I have been enthralled by the craftsmanship and skills of blacksmiths and steelmakers. Films and literature, like “Conan the Barbarian” and Jean Auels’ “Earthchildren” series dealt with fire and water as catalysts in tool and weapon making. The Damascus Steel series is my vision of that moment of creation, when the fires and the water form the steel and in a sense life itself." - benMUSA

Artist statement: "I am constantly fascinated by the fine line between science and faith. The more I paint, the more I realize how this continuous juxtaposition permeates every aspect of life. I see it played out in our hopes and dreams. I witness it in the aspirations of today's revolutions. And the result of my awareness encompasses every part of my collection. My work amplifies our constant state of flux, showing how the universe in every way is on the edge of a continuous event horizon." Biography: With over 20 years of experience creating innovative and high impact images, designs and concepts, Abstract expressionist painter, benMUSA, (full name Anas Ben-Musa) delves into his rich Libyan heritage to create spiritually exhilarating, opulent art. Born in Los Angeles, benMUSA called Houston home for nearly 3 decades, before relocating to Chicago in 2005. He has traveled extensively through the Mediterranean region. In 2012, benMUSA traveled back to his homeland where he reconnected with his family and friends that he hadn't seen in nearly 35 years. He looks forward to display the beauty of his culture and homeland in new series of paintings that will become the showpieces of the benMUSA Collection.
