ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have made a few floral paintings, but never truly explored the power of a palette knife in my work before, I thought a small study was a good place to try it out. The main flower itself is done with a brush, leaving the strokes within the petals, and the rest of the work is done primarily with a palette knife using thick paint. I wanted the image to be almost tangible like the flower itself, as though you could reach out and touch it. I've learned that small shapes or hints of color can imply bigger things, and your brain will fill in the rest of the information on its own, which is why I chose to keep the rest of the work simple. It allows for the viewer to almost create their own image of what the work represents in their mind, while keeping the main body of the piece as the highlight.

Bradley Kahabka currently resides in Long Beach California, where he has received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drawing and Painting from California State University Long Beach with a minor in sculpture. Brad's oil paintings often reference a sense of nostalgia, a personal connection to the past and things that have been forgotten, while at the same time pushing the boundaries of modernity. His bold brushwork, color and aesthetic decisions encapsulate his background during his youth, his time as a soldier in the Army, and of his love for the romantic period of painting. He places a high value on the introspection of self, of the significance of things from a bygone era, and of the contemplation of the overlooked and often mundane situations that define life’s journey. His work has been shown from California to Texas, and has had work showcased in the CSULB art museum and president’s house.
