Bluestone Falls Painting

After a plien aire painting trip to Yellowstone National Park with my father Carl Tolpo in 1969 I decided to rebel. At age 19 I wanted to make something different out of the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. One of my father's nemesis was Picaso, so I had my blue period in this painting. If you know the Lower Falls all of the elements are there: the shape of the falls, the notch in the top of the falls, the basalt shape to the right of the falls, the cloud of steam always to the right of the falls, the rock promentory in the right foreground. This is a playful whimsical approach to a "Great" subject matter. It is unexpected. It has cubist qualities. The spiral very skillful paint movement in the cloud of steam foretells my years of pottery making. It is this spiral that began my intrigue with the spiral shape for nearly 50 years after making the mark.
