Meet the Southeastern American game bird that's so polite he says his name twice. You can hear it in his call saying he's, "Bob, Bob White!" The Bob White Quail is an often underappreciated creature. Its popularity comes and goes like the tide. At one point, they were considered a noble game bird. Today, they are given very little consideration by many hunters, ecologists, conservationists, and environmentalists alike. However, the Bob White Quail is a special animal. Their numbers are almost like a litmus test for the health and balance of the Southeastern Woodlands. If a Bob White quail cannot eat it, then few other animals in the woods will be able to eat it. If something is hunting them down to critical numbers, then that means the population totals of other creatures are in danger as well. In Florida, Texas, and other areas throughout America landowners and ranchers are now looking at quail and turkey numbers to determine the impact of invasive feral hogs. If hog numbers become too large, they will eat up indigenous quail, turkeys, frogs, and other creatures before moving up the chain to deer fawn and others. About the Artist: Ken Johnson is a Southern heritage feather painter. Feather painting is a Native American artform which was handed down to him. In 2001, Jeb Bush, Governor of the State of Florida, abolished state recognition for non-federally recognized tribes. This made it illegal for American Indian artists, from over 500 non-recognized Florida tribes, to call their work "American Indian Made" or to call themselves "Native American artists." Enraged, he quickly took up a leadership position in his tribe and started promoting his artwork as a protest to this onerous change in Florida legislation. He uses his paintings not only as a protest but also as a way to showcase causes, key concepts, social justice issues, ecological issues, history, and more.
