Late summer, cloudless skies and friendly seas, bodysurfers claw at the waves and shoot through the foam to the sand. This picture is part of the ‘oceanside’ series of paintings. Paint has been generously applied using a palette knife rather than a brush, giving texture and depth. The colours of the waters surface dominate, the texture overtaking the image. Rory OBrien is a Sydney figurative painter working in oils, acrylics and watercolours. Rory also has a background in photography and printmaking. This site features Rory’s latest paintings on canvas. Rory exhibits regularly, including a highly successful joint showing called 'Contours/Currents' with painter Karen Michaels in March 2022, a pop-up show called 'Hot dogs' with Traffic Jam galleries in January 2022 and a solo show of watercolours, oils and acrylics called 'Released' in November 2021 - both shows in Sydney Australia. Rory has been exhibiting his artwork since 1992, has had many solo shows of his paintings, printmaking and photography and received a Bachelor of Art (Visual Art) from Sydney's City Art Institute (now UNSW Art, Design and Architecture). Rory has been a regular exhibitor at The Other Art Fair in Sydney (2021, 2019) and Melbourne (2018)
