About The Artwork

This is a view of one part of the Donau (Danube) river coast, North of Budapest - a part where there’s a significant culture and tradition for rowing. Some decades ago this was a bustling scene of rowers and canoe enthusiasts. People had sheds and small summer houses that held the boats and each one had railings into the water - just like the ones you can see in the painting (imagining that the river is behind you). The owners would push out their boats right into the river, often holding competitions and spending a whole day in the river, having chats, drinks, and meals. This particular place of boats seems to still be in operation and is not abandoned, unlike some other ones next to it. The owners of it seem to have the same plastic chairs and beach umbrella as some decades ago - a time capsule or an homage to the bustling times. But not everything feels nostalgic and as if from the past. As we were passing this place with bikes, we saw people pushing their boats out and setting up or down the Donau - with the same ease and habit as taking your bike out. It seems this tradition might be coming back, bringing back the mastery and skill of rowing. This painting is dedicated to the people keeping the tradition alive.
