About The Artwork

All Jemal's realistic paintings are painted using the technique of the old masters, who used several layers of oil and glaze. Glazing is a successive application of transparent layer of paint over another dried layer of paint. When glazing in oils artist applies multiple layers and each layer affects the final oil painting and gives the picture the effect of transparency. The task of this method of work is to obtain complex shades of colour by optical mixing of "pure" colours, superimposed one on top of the other. Jemal likes to paint simple still lifes and applies minimalism style, which developed in the late 1950s as a rejection of the abstract expressionism, to his realistic paintings. The artist calls it - Minimalism in Realism. "All I want anyone to get out of my [works] and all I ever get out of them is the fact that you can see the whole idea without any confusion. What you see is what you see." –Frank Stella, 1964, American artist. At the same time, objects in the artist’s still lifes carry a symbolic message, with which J.Gugunava seeks to convey the meaning of the narrative. In this still life, it is a white sheet of paper and a frame. On the one hand, the artist asks the question "Can we start with a clean sheet?”, and on the other, he shows that we are often limited in our impulses by circumstances. Size (unframed): 60(W) x 80(H) x 2(D)cm / 23.6"(W) x 31.5"(H) x 0.78"(D) Size (framed): 62(W) x 82(H) x 3.5(D) / 24.4"(W) x 32.2"(H) x 1.37"(D) Website: Instagram link: @jemal_gugunava_art

Spreading his time between UK, Prague, and Georgia, Jemal paints everything that catches his eye and imagination: landscapes, places, streets, still life, people, and female forms. Trained as a painter, Jemal's work comprises a wide range of techniques from the Venetian method, used by Titian, to contemporary impasto technique that gives a 3D appearance to his work. Although Jemal's philosophy of life is harmony, purity, deep reflection, beauty, contemplation, reserve, and simplicity of existence, he tends to dramatize rather than simply describe. He forces a viewer to concentrate his or her attention on the main object, not being distracted by many small details. The style that the artist uses in his still lifes, he calls "Minimalism in Realism". Objects in his simple still lifes always have a symbolic meaning, carry a certain message, and make the viewer think about the meaning of life. All the works that the artist creates are interconnected, although at first glance this is not the case. How can a still life be like a landscape or a portrait? The point is that in Jemal's portraits, the same questions are asked: "Who am I?", "Why are we here?", "Where are we going?", "What is the purpose of existence?"
